Pakistani lawyers have announced the launch of a new movement against the recent constitutional amendments. Legal leaders have expressed concerns that these amendments pose a serious threat to the independence of the judiciary and the constitution. They have vowed not to tolerate any interference with the constitutional court, no matter the cost.
Senior lawyer Hamid Khan Advocate stated in a press conference, “It is crucial to initiate this movement to safeguard the independence of the judiciary. The Constitution of Pakistan is a sacred document, and we reject any unconstitutional steps that compromise it.”
The legal fraternity has voiced strong opposition to the government’s proposed constitutional amendments, warning that if the government attempts to implement the package, the lawyers’ community will fiercely resist. Hamid Khan further emphasized that these amendments are an affront to democracy, and the legal community will raise their voice against them.
Advocate Rabia Bajwa also announced her support for the movement, stating, “The government is introducing constitutional amendments behind closed doors, which is against the principles of democracy.”
Supreme Court lawyers Munir A. Malik and Faisal Siddiqui termed the proposed amendments an attack on judicial independence, adding that Justice Qazi Faez Isa has been advised to step down from his position on October 25, 2024. The lawyers have called on the judiciary and legal community to unite in opposition to these unconstitutional amendments.
Sheikh Ahsanuddin emphasized that both lawyers and the nation must now struggle for judicial independence. “This is the time to raise our voices for the rule of law and stand together against any unconstitutional actions,” he added.
Pakistan’s lawyers have declared that they will launch a full-scale movement against the new constitutional amendments to protect the constitution and judicial independence.
